What Does IP65 Mean for Outdoor Christmas Lights? Waterproof Ratings Explained

IP65 means the device is fully protected against dust (the 6) and against water jets from any direction (the 5). For Christmas lights, that means they can handle rain and stay outside all season. It doesn't mean submersible, though: don't leave them sitting in a puddle, and keep the power adapter sheltered.

What is an IP rating?

IP stands for "Ingress Protection": how well a device keeps things from getting inside. The rating is defined by an international standard (IEC 60529) and has two digits:

  • the first digit (0 to 6) rates protection against solids: fingers, tools, dust;
  • the second digit (0 to 9) rates protection against water: drips, rain, jets, submersion.

The higher the numbers, the better the protection.

Ratings you'll see on holiday lights

IP20

Indoor use only. No water protection. Many cheap indoor string lights fall into this category.

IP44

Protected against splashing water. Fine outdoors under cover (porch, covered balcony), but less reassuring in a downpour.

IP65

Dust-tight and protected against water jets. A very solid level for Christmas decorations exposed to rain and snow on a balcony or house front.

IP67 and IP68

Protected against temporary (IP67) or continuous (IP68) submersion. Useful for pool or pond lighting, rarely needed for balcony decor.

What IP65 lets you do

  • Leave your lights outside in rain and snow for the whole holiday season.
  • Hang them on an exposed railing with no overhang.
  • Use them indoors too, no restrictions.

The Glowcony Magic Curtain is IP65 rated: it's designed for both indoor and outdoor use.

What IP65 doesn't cover

  • Submersion: don't let the curtain lie where water pools.
  • The power adapter: the rating applies to the LEDs and curtain wiring, not necessarily the power supply. Keep the 12 V adapter sheltered, indoors or in a weatherproof outdoor box.
  • Outlets and extension cords: these must be outdoor-rated too.
  • Impacts and pulling: a curtain flapping in the wind wears out faster. Secure the bottom.

Tips for outdoor lighting that lasts

  • Route the power cable in a small downward loop before the plug (a "drip loop"): water running along the cable drips off at the low point instead of reaching the connection.
  • Raise the adapter off the floor on a covered balcony: never set it directly on the ground.
  • Use the timer to limit how long the lights are on.
  • At the end of the season, let the curtain dry before storing it somewhere dry.

IP65 and cold weather

IP ratings say nothing about temperature: they only cover dust and water. LEDs generally handle cold well, but melted snow that refreezes can form ice on the cables. If that happens, let it melt naturally instead of pulling on the strands.

FAQ

Can IP65 lights be left out in the rain?

Yes. IP65 means protection against water jets, so rain is not a problem. Just keep the adapter sheltered.

IP65 or IP44 for a balcony?

IP44 is fine under cover; IP65 is the safer choice for a balcony exposed to rain and snow.

Does IP65 mean waterproof when submerged?

No. For submersion you need IP67 or IP68. IP65 decorations shouldn't sit in water.

Can the Glowcony curtain be used indoors too?

Yes, it's made for both indoor and outdoor use: window, bedroom, living room, balcony or railing.
