Christmas Window Curtain Lights: How to Hang Them + Decor Ideas

The easiest way to decorate a window for Christmas is to hang curtain lights on the inside, just behind the glass: they're clearly visible from the street and stay out of the weather. A tension rod or your existing curtain rod is all you need, no drilling. With animated LED curtain lights, your window becomes a little Christmas screen the whole neighborhood can enjoy.

Inside or outside: where should the curtain go?

Inside (the most common)

Hung behind the glass, the curtain shines right through the window at night. Benefits: no exposure to weather, it plugs straight into an outlet in the room, and it works even if you live on the 6th floor with no balcony.

Outside

If your window opens onto a balcony or porch, you can also hang it outdoors against the wall or railing. The Glowcony Magic Curtain is IP65 rated and handles rain; only the adapter needs to stay sheltered. For that setup, follow our guide on hanging LED curtain lights on a balcony without drilling.

How to hang window lights without drilling

  • Tension rod: it wedges into the window frame, no screws. Perfect for renters.
  • Existing curtain rod: use the 20 hooks included with the Glowcony curtain.
  • Adhesive hooks: stuck to the top of the frame or the wall above.
  • Suction cup hooks: directly on the glass, as extra support.

Tip: hang the curtain a couple of inches away from the glass rather than pressed against it. You get fewer reflections and the animations look sharper from outside.

Which size for which window?

A standard window around 4 to 5 ft wide looks great with a 2 × 2 m (about 6.5 × 6.5 ft) curtain, even if it overlaps a little on each side or you fold up the bottom. For a sliding door 8 ft wide or more, the 3 × 3 m (about 10 × 10 ft) covers the surface better. Both sizes have 400 LEDs; on the 3 × 3 m they're simply spaced further apart. Details in our comparison 2 × 2 m vs 3 × 3 m.

5 ideas for a Christmas window that gets noticed

1. A light-up Advent calendar

Switch animations every December evening: snowflakes on Monday, reindeer on Tuesday, Santa on Wednesday… Neighborhood kids will start walking by on purpose to see the surprise of the day.

2. A scrolling message

"Merry Christmas", "Happy Holidays" or a shout-out to your neighbors: custom text takes seconds to set up in the app. Learn how in our guide to custom text on LED curtain lights.

3. Warm white ambiance

Prefer something understated? Steady warm white or a gentle twinkle gives an elegant, cabin-like feel.

4. A musical window

During a holiday party, turn on music mode: the lights react to the sound in the room.

5. Curtain + windowsill combo

Add a few pine branches, pine cones and a small LED lantern on the inside sill. The curtain is the backdrop, the sill is the foreground.

Getting the brightness right

In a bedroom or living room, full brightness can feel too strong from inside. Turn it down in the app: at night, it's still very visible from outside. And set the timer to switch off automatically at bedtime.

FAQ

Can you see indoor curtain lights from outside?

Yes, very well, especially after dark. Hang them a couple of inches from the glass and switch off the room lights for the best effect.

How do you hang lights in a window without nails?

With a tension rod, an existing curtain rod and hooks, or adhesive hooks. No holes needed.

What size LED curtain do I need for a window?

The 2 × 2 m fits most windows; the 3 × 3 m is better for a wide sliding door.

Can I leave the curtain lights on all night?

You can, but it's easier to use the timer to switch them off when you want. The LEDs are rated for around 50,000 hours.
